As part of the REC Program this year, all middle school students participated in a REC club of their choice once a term. Examples include mountain bike riding, crocheting, reading, creative writing, chess, matball, karaoke, origami and bead designs.
As part of this initiative, resident fishing nut Mr Cumming created a ‘Fishing 101’ club for Year 9 students who were keen to learn the basics of everything fishing. With students having various levels of knowledge and previous experience, the club spent their first few sessions learning appropriate tackle for different target species, hot spots for fishing around the area, how to tie common rigs and also participated in some casting competitions.
In Week 4 the Fishing Club had the opportunity to practice their skills on a day excursion to Rapid Bay jetty. The weather was perfect and the crew really enjoyed testing out a range of different fishing methods. Although the fishing was quieter than they would have liked, it was a great experience for all. For the final club meet of the year, the team helped prepare and cook some crumbed salt and pepper squid, caught locally by Mr Cumming.
