As part of our ongoing relationship with The Smith Family organisation, we recently hosted career talk sessions for our senior students as part of the REC Program.
An inspirational line-up of guests gave up their time and shared their career journeys and discussed current jobs/pathways available in their respective industries.
Year 12 Career Talks
Our speakers were:
- Emma Sckrabei – The Umbrella Collective
- Jane Pappin – Pop-Up Health
- Gurleen Kaur – REDARC
- Kaie Maennel – University of Adelaide
- Julia Grant – City of Onkaparinga
Some key messages included:
- the importance of having good interpersonal communication
- being open to opportunities and taking risks to explore your strengths
- having a passion to follow, and not letting other people/things distract from your focus
Year 11 Career Talks
Our speakers were:
- Paul Ralston – Workspace Commercial Furniture
- Ben Cosford – IT specialist and Musician
- Kylie Cakua – Australian Nursing and Midwifery Education Centre
- Amanda Hewer – Born to Build program
Some key messages included:
- the importance of undertaking work experience to broaden your ideas about career pathways/training options
- doing research to learn about the diversity of job roles in particular industries. For example in Construction, which covers Domestic, Industrial, Commercial and Civil
- accepting who you are as a person (“be your own unicorn”), seek out mentors and/or career coaches and stay curious about your career journey
- listen out/be alert/foster networks to learn about job opportunities
