Makayla’s future is looking good

Makayla G applied for the VET course of Certificate III Rural Operations (Animal Care & Husbandry) because of her love for animals and her experience of growing up looking after dogs and livestock; from this she realised what her passion was.

Makayla attended Urrbrae High School to undertake her course run by RST and the highlight for her was learning about dog behaviour, pet grooming and getting hands on with livestock as well.

Makayla was able to successfully combine her one Year 12 school subject and VET course to complete her SACE as she realised that she didn’t want to go to university, but also knew there were other ways to be successful. She used her class and VET time wisely; did homework before going out to socialise and made sure she submitted her assignments on time.

Makayla says:

‘My VET course has led me to know more about working with animals and it has helped me in my current job at Paw by Paw Daycare and Grooming Salon. I first got the job at Paw by Paw as a junior dog bather in 2020 before I started the course, then as time went on I was asked to work as a daycare assistant. While completing the course as well as working at Paw by Paw, the course has helped me to understand a bit more about dog behaviour. I was interested in learning how to become a dog groomer, so I spoke to the directors at Paw by Paw to see what I could do, then they gave me a trial to see if I liked it or not. I was successful with this new role and was offered a Traineeship to become a groomer. The VET course has helped me achieve my dream job as I believed in myself and did not give up on what I wanted to achieve.’
