Reynella East Debating

This year REC has entered a team in the State Schools Debating Competition’s Senior Division. The team is made up of Andre D (Year 9), Lucy M, Kadence Q and Taliah J (all in Year 11). We were to face St. John’s Grammar in Round 1 but due to them withdrawing, we were handed the win and the 4 points!

We went to Glenunga International High School anyway last Wednesday for a “friendly” debate against Aberfoyle Park High School. The topic was “That we should not bother to prosecute war criminals for alleged war crimes.” We were negative. Andre, Kadence and Lucy spoke professionally and at a very high standard with very sound points of argument. They each spoke for the required 8 minutes and represented REC as if they were seasoned professionals instead of a group of students at their first debate. Even though we were very narrowly defeated by Aberfoyle, we remain adamant that we SHOULD bother to prosecute war criminals for alleged war crimes.

Our next topic for debate is “That Christo’s installation is pretentious.” We are affirmative. Wish us luck!

Congratulations REC team on a great night.
