Our school debating team has continued its strong start to the year, winning its second debate of the season after a closely contested round against Concordia at Immanuel College.
The topic for the evening was “That Australia should introduce compulsory military service for school leavers.” Our team argued the affirmative side against a highly skilled and well-prepared Concordia team.
According to debate coach Bryce Woodley, the debate was one of the highest-quality contests seen in many years. The adjudicator took almost 30 minutes to make a final decision before declaring our team the winners by just one point.
Representing the school were Zoe L, Sophie W and Ameeran A, with Bonnie M serving as chairperson. All students delivered thoughtful arguments, strong reasoning and excellent rebuttals throughout the evening.
A special congratulations goes to Ameeran A, who was named Speaker of the Night. Sophie W also received the same award during the first debate earlier this term.
Mr Woodley praised the team for the many hours of preparation and commitment required to compete successfully against strong schools in the competition.
The school also thanks members of the Morphett Vale Rotary Club, Warren and Andre Dobie, for attending and supporting the team, along with Nikki Cook for her ongoing support during debate meetings.
The team’s next scheduled round will result in an automatic win due to a forfeit. However, students will still attend Immanuel College to take part in a practice debate with a Debating SA adjudicator.
