The Ramsey Unit recently took part in a fun Design and Technologies challenge. Working in teams, students designed and built a shelter for Sir Harley Houndstooth III, a shipwreck survivor stranded on a deserted island.
Using a limited range of materials, including pop sticks, paper, tape and string, students planned, designed and constructed shelters that met a set of design requirements.
Once the shelters were complete, they were put to the test in a simulated storm using a leaf blower. Students watched how their designs performed as the wind strength increased and reflected on what worked well and what could be improved.
The challenge gave students the opportunity to build their teamwork, creativity, problem-solving and critical thinking skills while following the design process in a hands-on and engaging way.
