On Thursday 28 June Ms Prear Lewan and Mr Tony Will accompanied 11 students to compete in the SA Power Networks VEX Robotics Competition.
This year the challenge was to simulate the identification and removal of a hot joint. A hot joint on the network is a connection somewhere on the powerline where there is a poor connection with high resistivity. This causes it to increase in temperature, sometimes to the point that it will glow red hot! These joints decrease power capacities and affect the reliability of the power, but worse still, represent a fire start risk. Therefore, this dangerous task is critical for preventing bushfire risks.
REC was represented by two teams:
Reynella Dynamics – Gabriel C, Zac M, Harrison F, Brayden H, Blake K, Christian T and Joel B
Get wRECked – Daniel R, Jonah L, Ben S and Gunveer B
This year saw an increase in the number of schools participating and the level of competition was high. This was our third year competing in this event and although we did not win any major prizes this year, we are still proud of the dedication and courage displayed by this group of students.
They were able to communicate clearly to the judges the many challenges they faced in their journey to competition day. The judges commended them on their resilience and determination.
We look forward to the next challenge from SA Power Networks in 2025.
