This year is the fifth consecutive year our VET Certificate II Construction Pathways students are working on a renovation house site provided by Housing SA.
The course currently has 18 students from REC and 10 students from other schools. The house project is a partnership between the College and Department for Education, the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), Housing SA and ATEC who are the training organisation that delivers the Certificate II Construction Pathways qualification, under the management of our Construction Teacher/Trainer, Mr Cameron Hunter.
At the house site, students apply their theoretical knowledge to real-life skills in an authentic setting for undertaking a house restoration/renovation. Such skills may relate to carpentry, gyprocking, tiling, painting, garden maintenance, demolition and concreting.
Students are immersed in a situation where they are treated as an ‘apprentice’ in an industry-standard environment. The ‘house’ experience realistically prepares students for their transition to a school-based or full-time apprenticeship, and the majority of our students thrive in this workplace and in developing their practical skills. They have great content to add to their resumes to reflect that they are work-ready.
