REC students celebrated Reconciliation Week with a variety of in-class and special activities. The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2023 was Be a Voice for Generations. This theme encourages all Australians to be a voice for reconciliation in tangible ways in our everyday lives – where we live, work and socialise.
A group of our First Nations students attended a talk by Kaurna man Jack Buckskin. They heard his thoughts on racism and reconciliation and what it means for our community. They also had morning tea with an Indigenous food flair, followed by a performance from proud Nukunu woman, Tilly Tjala Thomas.
The week finished on a high note for our Primary students with a special performance by Dion Drummond. Dion shared tales, language and artefacts from both of his cultures, teaching students about the different traditions of his Torres Strait Island and Aboriginal heritage. Students and teachers alike had a lot of fun learning the dances and singing songs.
