Young Aboriginal STEM Thinkers of South Australia

This year Reynella East College is a Young Aboriginal STEM Thinkers of South Australia (YASTSA) school. Developing students’ capacity and understanding around STEM and developing students as leaders so that they can learn about Indigenous connections to STEM and how that relates to them.

Next term, five of our First Nations students from Years 5-10 will be presenting a workshop on astronomy at the annual STEM Aboriginal Learner Congress to 1000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from all around South Australia. They will also participate in a number of other STEM activities in the lead up.

Recently they went to Adelaide Uni where they met Indigenous students from around South Australia, did a campus tour and participated in a range of STEM activities.

They also presented their Congress workshop and activity idea to the other YASTSA schools. The purpose of their workshop is for students to understand and learn about how First Nations dreaming stories link to the constellations.
